Goodreads:  Two girls are forced into the woods at gunpoint. One runs for her life. One is left behind…

Twenty-eight years ago, Charlotte and Samantha Quinn's happy small-town family life was torn apart by a terrifying attack on their family home. It left their mother dead. It left their father — Pikeville's notorious defense attorney — devastated. And it left the family fractured beyond repair, consumed by secrets from that terrible night.

Twenty-eight years later, and Charlie has followed in her father's footsteps to become a lawyer herself — the ideal good daughter. But when violence comes to Pikeville again — and a shocking tragedy leaves the whole town traumatized — Charlie is plunged into a nightmare. Not only is she the first witness on the scene, but it's a case that unleashes the terrible memories she's spent so long trying to suppress. Because the shocking truth about the crime that destroyed her family nearly thirty years ago won't stay buried forever…

Kritters Thoughts:  A pair of sisters have endured the unimaginable and have seen things that kids of any age shouldn't and each react in different ways and must deal with the consequences.

The book mostly takes place in current day in this small town where Charlie is just trying to get by day to day and keep the past in the past.  She is doing what her father did and with her father which may cost her a lot, but she wants to be "the good daughter."  She is in the wrong place at the wrong time and things spiral out of control.

There are a few key moments in the book when the narrative goes into the past and it is hard to read, but it really informs the present.  I loved how the author put them in and how they were done.  I don't want to spoil too much, but will say that this book isn't for the faint of heart - if you are opposed to abuse to children then you may want to avoid this one.

I have only read a few of Karin Slaughter's but after I read each one, I keep meaning to grab more they are the best when it comes to mystery/thriller and she just knows how to do it.

Rating: definitely a good read, but can't read two in a row
