Review: The Bracelet by Roberta Gately

The Bracelet by Roberta Gately

Publisher: Gallery Books
Pages: 304
Format: book
Buy the Book: Amazon

Goodreads:  Humanitarian aid Abby Howell and reporter Nick Sinclair find themselves in the middle of a human trafficking ring in Pakistan. When Abby realizes she may have witnessed a murder by a high-ranking official, she and Nick must break the story before she becomes its next casualty.

Kritters Thoughts:  A different kind of setting, taking place in Pakistan was an interesting place to this suspenseful thriller centered around human trafficking and the current happenings in this volatile country.  With the author putting two huge topics into one book, as the reader, I didn't feel overwhelmed, I loved how both the issues interacted with each other in the story and how one can affect the other.

Abby was a perfect main character, she was captivating and made me want to read on and on - I loved her inquisitive nature, she always wanted to know more about the people and places that surrounded her.  Nick, a journalist comes into the picture a bit into the book and this is when the story really took off and started shaping - through him and his journalistic efforts, Abby is taken to places she never though she would have seen.

As an interesting side, this book hit kind of close to home because my mom was born to missionaries as they were stationed in Pakistan.  She only lived there for the first 6 months of her life, but I have always wanted to know more about the place where she was born, even if she didn't spend a lot of time there.  We always have issues being that her birth certificate is from there, even if she is as American as you and me.

Rating: absolutely loved it and want a sequel (or to read her other book very soon)

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received one copy of this book free of charge from Simon and Schuster.  I was not required to write a positive review in exchange for receipt of the book; rather, the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Review: The One I Left Behind by Jennifer McMachon

The One I Left Behind by Jennifer McMahon

Publisher: William Morrow
Pages: 432
Format: eARC
Buy the Book: Amazon

Goodreads:  The summer of 1985 changed Reggie's life. Thirteen, awkward, and without a father, she finds herself mixed up with her school's outcasts-Charlie, the local detective's son, and Tara, a goth kid who has a mental hold over Reggie and harbors a dark secret. That same summer a serial killer called Neptune begins kidnapping women. He leaves their severed hands on the police department steps and, five days later, displays their bodies around town. Just when Reggie needs her mother Vera-an ex-model with many "boyfriends" and a thirst for gin-the most, Vera's hand is found on the steps. But after five days, there's no body and Neptune disappears.

Now a successful architect who left her hometown behind after that horrific summer, Reggie doesn't trust anyone and lives with few attachments. But when she gets a call from a homeless shelter saying that her mother has been found alive, Reggie must confront the ghosts of her past and find Neptune before he kills again.

Kritters Thoughts:  I always love a who dun it, especially when it combines a past plotline with a current plotline, but this book went a little too much overboard.  There were a few elements that maybe took the story a little too far and towards the end there were too many possible suspects.  A wonderful addition between the two plotlines was excerpts of an investigative book which provided the readers with details of the killings that maybe the main character or other characters couldn't provide - this added so much to the story.

Reggie was a fantastic main character with issues that were both present in the childhood plotline and the current plotline.  I loved how these two plotlines grew perpendicularly and then collided and then grew together, that part of the book was amazing.  Her relationships with her friends, family and potential mate were great, I think she stayed a true character and I didn't find issues between the two stories.

My main complaint was the overabundance of suspects.  Towards the end, I was ready for the killer to be revealed and how they had covered up their path over the many years.  Once I found out the clues and thought it was one person, Reggie took us on a path to another possible suspect - I just wanted to know!

I think most readers of who dun its would enjoy this book, you just may need a little patience with it towards the end.

Rating: enjoyable, but didn't leave me wanting more

Review: Insatiable by Emily Kimelman

Insatiable by Emily Kimelman

Pages: 320
Format: ebook
Buy the Book: Amazon

Goodreads:  INSATIABLE begins with private detective Sydney Rye living a simple, disciplined life in London, but when a dangerous man from her past calls, Rye finds she cannot turn him away. Robert Maxim explains that the daughter of a powerful friend has gone missing and he wants Rye to find her. In exchange he offers her something she had given up hope of ever having; freedom from her past.

With her dog, Blue, at her side, Rye meets up with her new partner, a handsome man she's not sure she can trust. Heading for Mexico City, they go undercover, posing as husband and wife. After meeting with the bereaved parents, Rye starts to sense that there is more going on than just a missing girl. But it isn't until they arrive in the Yucatan Peninsula, hot on the girl's trail in Paradise, that all hell breaks loose. Sydney has to reach out for help from old friends and deal with the consequences of her past, if she's going to find the girl and keep them all alive.

Kritters Thoughts: Another great book in the Sydney Rye series, it was easy to get back into her world and head out with her on her next adventure.  Her contacts get in touch with her and send her on a mission to rescue a girl who has gone missing and although the task sounds simple; it is anything but a simple mission.

From the beginning of the book and her mission, I knew it wouldn't go as planned and was just excited to see where it would all go up in smoke.  I was not let down at all, just as I thought she may have it together, it implodes and I loved the ups and downs of her journey to get the mess cleaned up.  I loved her cohorts in this book, they were entertaining and definitely added a little extra to this book.

I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a little mystery in each book and a place where you can fall in love with a character and follow her through a few mysteries.

Rating: definitely a good read, but can't read two in a row

Review: Five Years to Live by Frank Zaccari

Five Years to Live by Frank Zaccari

Publisher: CreateSpace
Pages: 254
Format: ebook
Buy the Book: Amazon

Goodreads:  It is the phone call every person lives in fear of receiving. There has been an accident and your loved one is paralyzed. A spinal cord injury is the single most devastating and life altering event. Based on a true story, Michael and Donna were young, successful, in love and planning their life together. That life was radically changed by a tragic car accident. Now a wheelchair user as a quadriplegic, with limited movement, constant infections and multiple surgeries, doctors projected Michael's best case life expectancy to be five years. See how this young man battles through his injury and spends his five years making a lasting impact on hundreds of people. It will make you realize what can be accomplished when a person does not let circumstances dictate their life.

Kritters Thoughts:  The author starts this book giving you the history of two individuals who eventually meet up and start a relationship, just as this relationship is about to start a real foundation, a tragic accident occurs that change both lives forever.

The book is very character centered.  The setting changed a little and impacted the story, but it was the characters and the boy and the girl who drive the story from beginning to end.  They weave in and out of each other's lives and impact each other's future.  I absolutely adored the big Italian family - sometimes I wish I had a bigger immediate family, although my sister is fantastic, our holidays are not rambunctious  they are rather quiet (which is nice also!).

What I loved most about this book is it made me think how many different decisions or paths lead me to the point where I am now with a husband, job, dog, blog and more.  As well, what more decisions do I have to make that could now alter both my life and the hubs' life.  It is all so interesting if you made a left turn instead of a right turn one day, your life could be somewhere completely different and would it be better, worse or just different.  A quick read, but will stay with me for awhile.

Rating: absolutely loved it and want a sequel

Review: She's the Boss by Lisa Lim

She's the Boss by Lisa Lim

Pages: 230
Format: eARC
Buy the Book: Amazon

Goodreads:  Twenty-something Karsynn is now a boss but she's not so much The Devil Wears Prada as she is The Angel Wears Payless. With a brighter career, things should be going better for Karsynn, right? Wrong. There's now a new director at the office--Carter Lockwood, and he's brought his reputation for wrecking havoc amongst the ladies. Karsynn prides herself in being the only one impervious to Carter's good looks. In fact, she takes great pleasure in blowing on the embers of Carter's hostility.

Karsynn thinks Carter is arrogant and obnoxious. Carter thinks Karsynn is an ignorant, sassy spitfire. But when they start working closely together, they discover that first impressions can be deceptive. Karsynn may be winning the battle against Carter, but will she lose the war? And more importantly, will she lose her heart?

Kritters Thoughts:  A companion novel to Confessions of a Call Center gal that I reviewed here last year on the blog and was definitely excited to read Lim's second book.  With a few repeat characters, it was great to return to the call center for a different story.  Kars is the main character in this book and as a manager she has to work closely with the new call center director - Carter Lockwood who has a few secrets up his sleeve.

A wonderful chick lit book that has a little bit of romance, a little bit of single galness, and a host of friends who round out Kars inner circle perfectly.  I absolutely loved the people at the call center, they all have their own distinct personalities and mannerisms, but I could see them all so clearly in my mind as people who may enjoy working at a call center.  Carter was a perfect opposite to Kars and I definitely enjoyed reading their interactions.

A great chick lit to start out the new year, may have read this in 2012, but excited to have it as my first review in 2013!

Rating: absolutely loved it and want a sequel

2013 Challenges

As 2012 closed, I decided to stick with the challenges that I participated in 2012 because I liked them all, but nothing more.

Where Are You Reading?

In this challenge, I keep a Google Map (link to my google map for 2013) and place a pinpoint at each spot where a book takes place.  The link to my google map will also be in the sidebar all year round, so anyone can check out where I have been reading!

If you would like to participate - check out Book Journey.

Ebook Challenge

So the blog that hosted this one last year, is now no longer, which is sad because this is the only one that I definitely overachieved   I will continue with this challenge, so if anyone is in with me to challenge how many ebooks you read in 2013, please leave a comment below and depending on interest, I will get something formal up and running.

Off the Shelf Challenge 2013

I failed at this challenge in 2012, but am bound and determined to do a better job with this one in 2012.  I have probably overcommited in the Making a Dent category, hoping to read more than 30 books off my shelf that arrived before 2013 began - we shall see!

I will have a label for this again in 2013 and hope to see it all over my blog this year!

If you would like more information on this challenge, check out Bookish Ardour.

Excited for 2013

I am so excited to start a new year - 2013!  13 is my favorite number, so this will definitely be the year!  We will probably be purchasing a home in early 2013 and I see 2013 as the year that I finally get my own book room - a major dream of mine!  The boy will also be getting his own study of sorts for all of his police gear!

What are you most excited about this new year?
