Review and Giveaway (CLOSED): The Romanov Sisters by Helen Rappaport

The Romanov Sisters
by Helen Rappaport

Publisher: St Martin's Press
Pages:
Format: book
Buy the Book: Amazon

Goodreads:  They were the Princess Dianas of their day—perhaps the most photographed and talked about young royals of the early twentieth century. The four captivating Russian Grand Duchesses—Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia Romanov—were much admired for their happy dispositions, their looks, the clothes they wore and their privileged lifestyle.

Over the years, the story of the four Romanov sisters and their tragic end in a basement at Ekaterinburg in 1918 has clouded our view of them, leading to a mass of sentimental and idealized hagiography. With this treasure trove of diaries and letters from the grand duchesses to their friends and family, we learn that they were intelligent, sensitive and perceptive witnesses to the dark turmoil within their immediate family and the ominous approach of the Russian Revolution, the nightmare that would sweep their world away, and them along with it.

The Romanov Sisters sets out to capture the joy as well as the insecurities and poignancy of those young lives against the backdrop of the dying days of late Imperial Russia, World War I and the Russian Revolution. Rappaort aims to present a new and challenging take on the story, drawing extensively on previously unseen or unpublished letters, diaries and archival sources, as well as private collections. It is a book that will surprise people, even aficionados.

Kritters Thoughts:  The Romanov family may be one of the most famous families in history, but I always wondered if all the stories I had heard about them were anywhere near the truth.  I was intrigued by this book when I received the pitch and was excited to see a bibliography that was many many pages knowing that this author sought out the truth to write her book.

With a few stories in a history class and a Disney movie, I knew that the little "facts" that I had from their history could be a little off.  I knew of Rasputin and knew of the finale, but didn't know how Rasputin was involved in the downfall of their family.

This book was FULL of details.  With 381 pages full of details.

The book started with some back story on the mother of the children, which was interesting to read how she was raised and then see her raise her own family.  Then after the two chapters of back story, the reader is taken into the dating and marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra.  Then the children come along and the story goes up and down and then really down.

The one thing that maybe I missed, but would have liked was a little bit more of a story as to why and when Russia as a country decided that Nicholas wasn't doing his job and what the rest of the country was feeling.  As this book centered around the family, as a reader I could feel the isolation that the family felt and maybe the exclusion of the outside world and the stories that were there was the author's choice.

If you have any interest in the Romanov family, click the giveaway below to enter to win a copy of your own.

Rating: definitely a good read, but can't read two in a row

Guest Post and Giveaway: Elizabeth Ann West

Today, I have a treat to share - a guest post from Elizabeth Ann West, author of Cancelled which was reviewed here at Kritters Ramblings.

“I Don't Read”
By: Elizabeth Ann West

“I don't like to read.”

“I just don't have time to read.”

How many times do we readers hear this from our family and friends? Funny thing is we WANT them to read, so we have someone to talk about books with...in person! In my own life, I live with a self-professed non-reader. He's 11. But he'll “forget” his reading time requirement (20 minutes per day) when I hand him my Nook.

How should we handle people who assure us they just don't read? Easy. Become a reading ambassador. Chances are very strong the person in question was never even asked what kinds of books he or she wanted to read as kid or young adult. Reading was always assigned. To them, we are nerds still giving ourselves homework!

Instead of asking your friend why he or she doesn't read, try asking what they like to read. Still coming up empty? Ask about TV shows or movies they like to watch. Try to find a book version to suggest. For example, did you know the popular Showtime series Dexter is based on the series of books by Jeff Lindsay? Introduce them to the online sample on their computer. They don't even have to step foot in a book store to browse titles!

What many non-readers don't realize is how rich the experience of reading is outside of being assigned. It's an entertainment form that educates in a very subtle way. By finding entertainment in stories, the reader picks up new vocabulary and other information, even from fiction! Don't give up on your non-reader friends. Help them. Help them find the materials they can enjoy, whether it's a favorite TV series' fan fiction or classics their teacher failed to put on the syllabus.

Today's digital libraries offer the greatest versatility in reading genres, cross-overs, and story lengths. Thre is a niche for every reader! The short story and novella formats, great for readers short on time, are making a massive comeback on ereaders. This is due in no little part by the work of independent authors. There's no reason a friend reclaiming reading as a past time should feel daunted by hundreds and hundreds of pages.

And never be afraid to be the training wheels! Why not try reading your non-reading friend's choice...together! You find a great new book to share together right here on Kritter's Ramblings. Her reviews are unique because they focus on the fun of reading the stories she selects, not just typical literary analysis. Her blog is a perfect catalog of titles to “shop” from!

Please reach out to someone you know who “hates to read.” You never know what kind of reading monster you'll unleash! :) Share your experiences below in helping a friend or family member to enjoy the world of books below! We can all learn from each other how to help literacy spread like wildfire!

As a special thank you for inviting me once again to Kritter's Ramblings, I have a special gift for all of the other reading junkies out there: a free, signed copy of my debut novel's ebook, CANCELLED.

If you would like a signed copy, just sign up for my newsletter and the preferred ereader you list is the format I will send. I write a handwritten note for each reader and scan it into the file, so your ebook is 100% unique. My newsletter goes out only once per month on the 25th and covers my latest writing projects, books I've read and can personally recommend, and technology tips for our busy online lives.

I am also daring one name each week from the newsletter subscribers and that winner receives a free signed and annotated paperback copy of CANCELLED straight to their door! I will ship internationally.

Review and Giveaway: Any Color but Beige by Cat LaRose

Any Color But Beige by Cat LaRose

Publisher: FriesenPress
Pages: 232
Format: book
Buy the Book: Amazon

Goodreads:  After years of living a beige existence, Cat Larose, international color marketing expert, finally added a little color to her own life. All it took was a Paris sunset and a little red suitcase.
Everyone wanted Cat's life. She had a handsome husband, a stylish home and a fascinating career as an international color-marketing consultant. Work took Cat to some of the world's most beautiful cities but something was missing: ironically, it was color. One day she found herself in Paris watching a sunset and, in a moment of clarity, she caught a glimpse of her sepia-toned future.
When Cat got home, she did what she'd longed to do for years. She decided to paint her bedroom a magnificent Bordeaux red and put an end to her beige existence and her marriage. That was the beginning of a new life.

Kritters Thoughts:  A memoir that can also be described as a collection of short stories that connect to make a larger story about the author's quest for color in her life.  I loved how each chapter had a title with a clue as to what was the central point to each story/chapter and a quote that could be found within the chapter, it was like a little peak before you start reading.

The reader is taken on a journey with a woman who finds love, loses love and quests to make color a central aspect in her life.  I absolutely loved her constant reminder that before one can find love they must love themselves.  A true theme that each woman must grasp at all times of their lives, whether in a relationship or single.

A great read for women of all ages and could bring great discussion amongst all women about the journey that we all take and the colors that impact the journey.  I am intrigued to describe my own life and the different stages in regards to the color that was the theme at each moment.

Rating:  absolutely loved it and want a sequel

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received one copy of this book free of charge from the author in conjunction with WOW Women on Writing.  I was not required to write a positive review in exchange for receipt of the book; rather, the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Review and Giveaway: Hospice Tails by Debra Stang

Hospice Tails by Debra Stang

Publisher: Booklocker.com, Inc.
Pages: 108
Format: print
Buy the Book:Amazon

Goodreads:
Funny, sad, and irreverent, Hospice Tails shares the stories of pets who traveled to the door of death with their humans.  Meet King, an abused pit bull fiercely loyal to his rescuer, Jasper and Jackie, Amazon parrots who sang their person to his final sleep, Washington, a golden retriever who became the only connection to the world for an Alzheimer's patient, and ten other animals who accompanied their beloved people on the hospice journey.

Kritters Thoughts:  Wow, emotional.  Being a pup owner, this story took on a whole different meaning and I became completely entranced by it.  Of course as  I was reading this gem, my pup, Miss Charlotte was curled up in my lap enjoying an afternoon on the couch with book in hand.

A book full of stories from a hospice nurse when a pet or animal has been involved.  Each was unique and fun to read in its own right.  From those who couldn't die without being surrounded by their pets to pets that were more of a menace than a comfort - I loved them all.

This book made me even more attached to my pup and how much our lives has changed as she has come in and made it her home too.  A book that is perfect for those who have a special pet in their lives and love to hear about how a pet can impact each human in the home.

Rating: definitely a good read, but can't read two in a row
